Located in a small rural town in northern New Jersey, the original structure, a farmhouse built in 1847, operated for many years as a hotel along a stage coach route at the turn of the century. The Gladstone Tavern features 212 seats in several dining environments, including 64 seats on an outside covered terrace. The project encompassed a full interior and exterior renovation of the historic structure and showcases much of the tavern’s historic character.
The original center entrance and center hall were reconfigured as the main restaurant entrance and host area. The new bar and lounge are located to the right of the entry. The main dining area was created as an open casual dining room with a feature fireplace and a central built-in seating kiosk. This provides diners with added intimacy and elegance in a casual setting. The second floor has been restored and reconfigured as a private dining room and utilizes the original second-floor porch as a reception and cocktail area.
The project design employed contemporary detailing in the new elements with vibrant modern finishes to contrast and compliment the original historic character. Rich fabrics, crafted millwork, custom lighting including linen shades in contemporary shapes, and contrasting colors are featured throughout.
