DAS Architects, Inc. announces the completion of the firm’s latest hospitality project, which encompasses an exclusive new wing of suites and extensive gardens at the Inn at Herrington Harbour, a luxury destination resort and marina on Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay.
As on-going design partners with the resort, DAS Architects has been working closely with the inn’s owners, the Chaney family, to bring the property’s overall vision to fruition. The firm has completed several projects throughout the 20-acre eco-friendly property over the past several years. Located approximately 35 miles from Washington, DC, Herrington Harbour South and its sister facility Herrington Harbour North combine to be the largest marina complex on the east coast with 2,400 boat stored: 1,200 in the water and 1,200 on land. Offering a secluded, tranquil ambiance, the marina features upscale resort amenities, including a beachfront area, sublime wedding facilities, elegantly appointed guestrooms, as well as meeting spaces and various dining experiences.
Most recently, DAS Architects designed the Inn at Herrington Harbour South, a two-story structure with 22 spacious guestroom suites featuring an “Arts and Crafts” architectural style. Reminiscent of a European village, the new suites are accented with soaring windows overlooking the bay with large outdoor porches, rich hardwood flooring and custom wood cabinetry. Emitting a classic ambiance, most of the suites’ distinctive antique furnishings were personally procured by the property owners who collected American and European furnishings and art.
As renowned environmentalists, the Chaney family is committed to preserving the coastal environment and the protected area around the Chesapeake. Reflecting this sensibility, DAS Architects also designed the new, expansive East Gardens that encompass four picturesque acres between the inn and the bay, showcasing indigenous flowers, plants and trees. The East Garden’s design features hand crafted wooden gates at the main entrance, meandering stone pathways throughout the garden, fresh water fills a covered pavilion that floats above a bioretention area that has a monarch butterfly habitat, a lavish wedding tent, and a sprawling ceremonial lawn area with the Bay as its backdrop. Elegant lighting brings the garden to life at night.
Fountains, sculptures and landscaping were selected to reflect the bay’s tranquil, natural surroundings, while strategically situated benches welcome visitors to pause and admire the stunning views of the waterfront, along with native Chesapeake Bay marine life, that has seen the return of the threatened diamondback terrapins and birds such as yellow crowned night herons.
Susan Davidson, co-founder of DAS Architects explains, “Working with the Inn at Herrington Harbour has been an exciting challenge and well as an incredibly rewarding experience. We are pleased to have a long-time partnership with the Chaney family, who are deeply committed to protecting the environment and truly leading the way to sustainably develop and preserve the sensitive and pristine Chesapeake area.”
Dave Schultz, co-founder of DAS Architects adds, “The Inn at Herrington Harbour is a truly special east coast destination. We are honored to be included in the Chaney family’s plans to enhance this distinctively beautiful property. We echo their devotion to preserving the Maryland shore and look forward to continue working with Herrington Harbour North and South to design upcoming projects.”
DAS Architects is currently working with the Chaney family on the renovation and re-opening of a new restaurant and pool lounge that will open Spring 2017.
